WHY WE CELEBRATE THIS? π₯
Surya (The Sun) moves into the sign of Capricorn on 14th/15th of January (based on where you are) and will stay there until 12th/13th of february.
Whenever the Sun changes signs it is called “Sankranti”. Every 30 days the Sun transits into a new zodiac sign causing 12 Sankrantis a year.
The transit of Sun in Capricorn is an extremely important Sankranti called “Makara Sankranti” and this begins an auspicious period known as “Uttarayana”. This also denotes the transit of Sun in Abhijit Nakshatra! Abhijit means invincible victory and is the most special and powerful Nakshatra in the 28 Nakshatra scheme.
According to Hindu tradition the six months of Uttarayana is a single day of the Gods; the six months of Dakshinayana (Southern movement when Sun enters the sign of Cancer) is a single night of the Gods.
1. Honor Bhaga Aditya with the mantra Aum Ghrini Bhaga Aditya, When the Sun transits into Makar Rashi, Bhaga Aditya is awakened and HE is responsible to provide all the resources to us during this transit.
2. The Pratyadi devata of the Sun is Lord Shiva and the Jyotirlinga connected to the sign Capricorn is Bhimashankar . You can chant the mantra - Aum Namah Shivaya Namo Bhimashankaraya to honor HIM for power and protection.
3. The form of Lord Ganesha associated with the sign Capricorn is “Vinayaka” you can use the mantra - Aum Vinayakaya Namah to honor HIM. This will help to remove obstacles and make progress during this transit.
4. Chant Savitur Gayatri Mantra thrice a day during each Sandhya on the day of Sankranti.
5. Feed people and donate grains/food.
6. Offer Arghya to sun.
Just as this festival brings the joy of the harvest, likewise it brings light in your career. We hope that your dreams soar high, just like the kites that dot the sky.
On the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, We at #ExpertsIASacademy wish you only success and nothing less. May this festival of flame burn all your low-confidence and fill a spark of learning in you.
It marks the celebration of harvest season of Rabi crops (such as wheat, barley, mustard, oats, amaranth, etc.)
It indicates the ending of biting cold winters and arrival of sunny days.
I Lohri gathering used to sing folk songs like
Sunder mundriye ho!
Tera kaun vicaharaa ho!
Dullah bhatti walla ho!
Dullhe di dhee vyayae ho!
Ser shakkar payee ho!
and used to go to our friends and relatives to wish them ‘Happy Lohri” and exchange some blessings.
