Lala Lajpat Rai was a freedom fighter and activist who played a significant role in India's independence struggle. He campaigned for the Swadeshi movement and lost his life due to injuries sustained while protesting the Simon Commission.

Today, as we celebrate his birth anniversary, here is a passionate and inspiring quote from him about the duties of a good government.

Lala Lajpat Rai was popularly known as 'Punjab Kesari'. He was one of the three members of the Lal Bal Pal triumvirate.

With his journalistic works, he inspired young men of his generation and sparked a sense of patriotism in their hearts.

Let us honour his revolutionary life through one of his quotes on his birthday.

Sardar Ajit Singh, ( freedom fighter and uncle of Bhagat Singh ) and Lala Lajpat Rai, organized farmers in Punjab to lead the Pagdi Sambhal Jatta movement that threatened to overthrow the British in 1907.

With the slogan, SIMON GO BACK, he pushed the British rule on the back foot.

In honor of his efforts we salutes our national hero, Lala Lajpat Rai for his contribution in India's liberation movement.

"I declare that the blows struck at me today will be the last nails in the coffin of British Rule in India."

Lala Lajpat Rai, a freedom fighter, heavily influenced by Hinduism, declared this after facing brutal attack by the British colonisers!

Lala Lajpat Rai is remembered for his role during the Swadeshi movement and for his advocacy of education.

Rai breathed his last on November 17, 1928 after getting hurt due to a baton charge ordered by the superintendent of police James A. Scott.

Rai was leading a non-violent march in protest against the Simon Commission which was set up to report on the political situation in India. The commission did not include a single Indian, leading to country-wide protests.

Some Facts

1. In 1881, he joined the Indian National Congress at 16, and in 1885 established the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic School in Lahore.

2. Lala first met Bal Gangadhar Tilak during the Lahore Session of the Congress in 1893 and the two along with Bipin Chandra Pal would become known as Lal-Bal-Pal, a trio who fervently advocated the use of Swadeshi goods.

3. He was deported to Mandalay (present day Myanmar) in 1907 for taking part in a demonstration in Punjab. However, he was allowed to return the same year due to lack of evidence against him.

4. Rai was elected President of the Indian National Congress during its Special Session in Kolkata in 1920, which saw the launch of Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-cooperation Movement.

5. Apart from founding the Arya Gazaette as its editor, he also authored several books and wrote biographies of Mazzini, Garibaldi, Shivaji and Shrikrishna.

What better tribute to Lala Lajpat Rai, whose birth anniversary we celebrate today, than to empower the farmers whose cause he espoused and even went to jail for. Agrarian distress has been a problem for centuries and agroforestry can help solve it by ensuring better soil, better produce, and sustainable agriculture.  Let us make it happen.

Salutations to him

Happy day dears!   Thank you!
