Today's GK question

Date: 03-03-2022

Question: On which date did Graham Bell used phone for first time ?

*Answer:* 10th March, 1876

Explanation: Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone made the first call on March 10, 1876, to his assistant, Thomas Watson: "Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you."

An Enthusiastic Story

The Scottish-born Bell had a lifelong interest in the nature of sound. He was born into a family of speech instructors, and his mother and his wife both had hearing impairments.

While ostensibly working in 1875 on a device to send multiple telegraph signals over the same wire by using harmonics, he heard a twang.

That led him to investigate whether his electrical apparatus could be used to transmit the sound of a human voice. Bell's journal, now at the Library of Congress, contains the following entry for March 10, 1876:

"I then shouted into M [the mouthpiece] the following sentence: "Mr. Watson, come here -- I want to see you." To my delight he came and declared that he had heard and understood what I said.

I asked him to repeat the words. He answered, "You said 'Mr. Watson -- come here -- I want to see you.'" We then changed places and I listened at S [the speaker] while Mr. Watson read a few passages from a book into the mouthpiece M. It was certainly the case that articulate sounds proceeded from S. The effect was loud but indistinct and muffled."

Alexandar Graham Bell, was among the founding members of the National Geographic Society. It's been centuries, the man never fails to surprise the world.

Today, on 3rd March the 175th Birth Anniversary of Alexander Graham Bell, we remember him as the great inventor of the 18th century, who made the dream come true when it was just an imagination.

Helllllowww...  are you there??

Some fun facts about our beloved phone!! 😁

👇🏻👇🏻

The phrase “to put someone on hold” was named after Alexander and his assistant Mr. Watson, when Bell handed Watson the phone and said “here, hold this.”

When Alexander Graham Bell died in 1922, all telephones stopped from ringing for one full minute as a tribute to the creator.

THAT DAY THAT YEAR...

On 14 th February in 1876, Alexander bell and Elisha Gray file patent application at US patent office for telephone! Let us know more about it:

TELEPHONE  INVENTION!

Extremely engaging to the curious mind

Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray independently invented telephone around the same time. Alexander filled a patent in US patent office on 14th February in 1876. Just 2 hours later, a scientist named Elisha Gray came to apply patent for the same device!

WHO IS FIRST?

Alexander when started his experimental work on telephone around 1867. By 1874 he was in competition to complete the work quickly due to his rival Elisha Gray.

Telephone at that time was better known as practical harmonic telegraph. The beauty in this tale is that the patent caveat filed by both scientist had similar diagrams. Are both the diagrams/blueprints unique? If not who copied who?

THE VERDICT

US supreme Court gave the verdict in favour of Alexander Graham Bell for the practical harmonic telegraph.

But it should be noted that a similar model of telephone was proposed for patent in 1871 by Italian scientist Antonio Meucci in US patent office! this model of Antonio was named talking telegraph at that time.

FIRST MESSAGE ON TELEPHONE

“Mr. Watson, come here; I want you.”

This message/conversation took place after 3 days from the patent by Alexander Bell.

Mr. Watson is none other than the assistant of Alexander Graham Bell- Thomas Watson, who was the original organiser of Bell telephone company

Mr. Bell was granted a patent for the telephone on 07 March, 1876 and it marked a paradigm shift in the world of communications, bringing people closer and shrinking the world. Today's globalization is built on instant and rapid communication and the telephone was a precursor to this.

Again Conflicts and Controversies

One of the biggest myths we’ve been living all our lives was that Graham Bell along with Elisha Gray was the inventor of the telephone.

Contrary to this belief, it was Antonio Meucci who was the real inventor of the telephone which was initially called the teletrophone.

This myth was burst on June 11, 2002, when the United States Congress approved resolution 269, which revealed it was Antonio who created the telephone.

In reality, Graham Bell was the first person to patent the device in 1876 as Meucci’s financial difficulties only allowed him to submit a brief description of his invention in 1871 and not register officially with the US Patents Office.

Happy day dears!   Thank you!
