Cross-cultural studies have shown that smiles are a way of communicating around the world.

A systematic large-scale cross-cultural study of the social perception of smiling individuals shows that in some cultures the smiling person is less intelligent than the non-smiling person.  Corruption at the social level may weaken the social perception of smiles - in societies with high corruption indicators, confidence in smiling individuals decreases.

In the United States and Canada, women are reported to be told to smile at men or vice versa.

For example, Gregory Ford, a Canadian MP, told a woman journalist to smile instead of answering a question she asked.  Biological anthropologist Helen Fisher states that although this is caring or controlled behavior, such behavior is unlikely to be welcomed.
