An announcement was made by the country's foreign ministry yesterday that India Government is moving towards a more efficient e-passport system for international travel and immigration from this year

External Affairs Secretary Sanjay Bhattacharya tweeted about the new features.

At the center of the e-passport is a microchip containing the owner's biometric data.

This will be in accordance with the standards of the Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an international organization related to aviation.

The passport will be manufactured at the India Security Press in Nashik.

What is the difference between a normal passport and an e-passport?

The e-passport is similar to the traditional passport.  However, the chip attached to the e-passport will contain crucial information about the owner.

Contains biometric data, name, address and other identifiable information.  It will provide information about the trips made by the owner.

The chip provides a high level of security.  Airport staff and passport holders may benefit from the fact that verification will not be required at the airport if a chip passport is used.  The current Indian passport is printed.

Central to the chip's features is its Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) microchip.

Heavy security measures have been put in place to reduce the risk of unauthorized data being taken from a chip containing biometric data.

The government says all of this will be of great benefit to those traveling internationally.

20,000 e-passports for ambassadors and officials have been issued as a first step in

initiating the process of issuing e-passports to the public.

If the experiment is found to be successful then e-passport will be issued to the public soon.
