National War Memorial (Delhi)

 * The National War Memorial is located in the capital Delhi

 * It is India's first National War Memorial

 * This monument is located near India Gate

This is where the Amar Jawan Jyoti is burning.

 * This memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 February 2019.

* This memorial is a fitting tribute to our jawans, who laid down their lives to protect the country after independence.

 * The National War Memorial also commemorates the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in peacekeeping missions and anti-anarchy operations

 * It has been built in honor of the soldiers who died after independence in 1947-48, 1962 Indo-China war, 1965 Indo-PAK war, 1971 Bangladesh creation, 1999 Kargil and other operations.

* This memorial is spread over an area of 20 acres.

 * The first initiative to build such a memorial was taken in 1970, after which in 2012 the Group of Ministers finalized the place near India Gate.

* Since 2012, the Ministry of Urban Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Home Affairs were working together to execute this project.

 * The Prime Minister, in 2014, presented his vision of the National War Memorial as a state-of-the-art world class memorial

* In October 2015, the Modi government had approved an amount of 176 crores for the memorial.

 * Chennai-based architect Yogesh Chandrahasan has designed this monument.

The configuration of the National War Memorial consists of four concentric circles, namely 'Amar Chakra', 'Veerta Chakra', 'Tyaag Chakra' and 'Rakshak Chakra'.

* A 15 meter high memorial pillar has been erected in the center of the monument.

The National War Memorial complex comprises a central quadrangular pillar, an eternal flame, and six bronze murals depicting famous battles fought by the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy

* Half-statues of 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees have been put up at the Param Yoddha Stall, which includes three living award winners Subedar (Honorary Captain) Bana Singh (Retd), Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav and Subedar Sanjay Kumar

 * The names of more than 25000 martyr soldiers who sacrificed for the country are written in golden letters on the walls of the memorial.

* The National War Memorial represents the culmination of the collective aspiration of a grateful nation to pay a befitting tribute to the martyrs

The hue and cry from the opposition over the shifting of Amar Jawan Jyoti- the  eternal flame which honours India's ' Unknown Soldier' from its location under India Gate to National War Memorial represent the deepening schism in country's socio-political landscape.

The  sacrifice of soldiers in protecting and upholding the country's integrity deserves a recognition in the form of war memorials.

Every nations across the globe have war memorials in commemoration  of the sacrifice of their soldiers and to enable the citizens to pay their homage.A

mar Jawan Jyoti was established at India Gate by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in recognition of sacrifice of our soldiers in 1972..

While India Gate was a war memorial erected by British imperialists in 1921 in memory of Indian soldiers who died in First World War and the third Anglo-Afghan war, many including the BJP leadership perceived it as monument not celebrating a national war.

To correct this perceived anomaly, the present Modi led ruling dispensation at the centre had bulit a National War Memorial ( NWM) in the national capital to recognise the honour and the gallantry of country's soldiers.

The  present political  wrangling over the decision to co- locate Amar Jawan Jyoti with National War Memorial  which is nothing but a logical step is wholly unwarranted.

Happy day dears
