SERIES: GREAT INDIAN KINGS
FOUNDER OF DELHI, MAHARAJA ANANGPAL TOMAR 2nd
( Reign 1051-1081 AD)
Anangpal Tomar ( Anangpal 2) was ruler of the Tomar Dynasty. Tomars ruled north india for 457 years and Anangpal 2nd was the 16th emperor of this dynasty which was founded by Anangpal 1 in 8th century. He traced his lineage of 3rd Pandava Arjun from Mahabharata.
The territory ruled by tomars was called HARIYANA ( ABODE OF SRI HARI) and was bigger than the present time Haryana state.
The first capital of the tomars was ANANGPUR ( close to Delhi and Sooraj Kund in Faridabad of Haryana) and the capital was shifted to DHILLIKAPURI ( DELHI, LAL KOT). Anangpal 2 was founder of Delhi who populated Delhi in 1052 AD.
Translation of an inscription in Delhi museum says..” In a country called HARIYANA, which is equivalent to heaven on earth, Tomars built a city called DHILLIKA.”The name DELHI is said to be derived from the word DHILLIKA.
The translation of An inscription on the iron pillar which was brought by him from SAUNKH (Mathura) and got it fixed in DHILLIKA in 1053 AD, also reads.. “ In Samvat 1109 ( 1052 AD), Anangpal founded
Constructions by Anangpal in his capital are LAL KOT, ASIGARH, FORTS, YOGMAYA TEMPEL, ANANGTAL BAOLI, SURAJKUND ( by his son).
And by dialect version of his minted coins, he is the actual father of Dilli and medieval Hindi Belt, but didn’t get this credit as the credit was given to Amir Khusrau who existed many centuries after Anangpal Yomar 2.
The Indian government has recently formed the “ Maharaja Anangpal 2nd memorial committee “ to popularize the legacy of 11th century Tomar emperor Anangpal 2nd.
