Lata Mangeshkar *

 Lata first had that dream when she saw an English movie while living in Nanachowk.  Dreaming of his concert in a western city.  That was never expected to happen.  But the musical journeys across the continents were a greater realization than a dream.  Approvals.  Love gifts.  Cities on public holidays celebrating Lata Mangeshkar's concert.  Cities celebrating Asia Day.  The days when Indians all over the world, along with the natives of the foreign countries where they live, forgot all about Lata's sound universe and enjoyed it.  Moments when he realized how much he and his music were loved.

 * First overseas trip *

 Lata's musical tour began in March 1974 with three charity shows at the Royal Albert's Hall on a cold London night.  The event was organized by the India League.  Dileep Kumar, India's proudest actor, was the presenter.  About 6,000 listeners.  It was a very cold night, with even the rocks warm.  Yusuf Bhaiya (Dileep) reminded Lataji as she entered the stage barefoot, taking off her shoes as usual: 'Don't put on your shoes.  Will die of cold.  It's so cold here. '  But Latha could not stand in front of the mic with her shoes on.  The singer, who has so much respect for music, finally came on stage with a sock.  Introducing Latha, Dileep said, "The beauty of this sister's voice cannot be described in words."  Prior to that, the Gold Disc for the singer who recorded the most songs in the world was released on March 8 at the EMI in London.  Given to Lata Mangeshkar.  Lataji is the first Indian artist to receive this award.  The British High Commissioner at the time, V.K.  Krishna Menon attended.  He was a prominent member of the India League which organized the choir.  He did not say much but sent a message that it was better to wear socks in London in the freezing cold of March.  Krishna Menon also sent a barber coat.

 Five years later, Lata visits London again.  Sunil Dutt and Nargis were present at the music night.  The event was held at the Royal Albert Hart.  Orchestra by Edwelsch, a Western musician.  Before leaving for London, he called Welsh and told him that he wanted to sing Meera Bhajan.  What is Bhajan?  - Welsh asked.  Lata's answer was a prayer of a soul who longs for the nearness of God beyond worldly life.  Meerabhajan Ed Welsh composed a beautiful piece.  Earlier, Latha had sent all the songs she wanted to sing and also prepared the notation.  British musicians did everything well.

 Lata visited Canada in 1967, though not for a concert.  A close friend who is a psychiatrist in Canada, Dr.  Nalini spent two weeks with Mitro.  Nalini's experience when she went to the choir while studying at St. Xavier's in the late forties.  Lata and Meena Mangeshkar later became Nalini's best friends.  Nalini, who has lived in Canada for two decades, was unmarried.  Two brothers settled in Kingston.  Lata was shown around the city of Toronto, Dr.  Nalini.  The beauty of winter Toronto was unforgettable.

 On the return journey from Canada we stayed in London for two days.  Asha lived with Bhosle's son Hemant.  Hemant was studying flying there.  Although she visited the British Museum, Lata ate a sandwich and had to return to Mumbai soon after suffering from food poisoning.  When Nalini died, Lata felt as if she had lost a very close relative.

 Harish Bimani, Latha's biographer, in his book 'In Search of Latha', mainly describes Lata Mangeshkar's foreign musical tours in the eighties.  He was also the host of those events.  The book also traces Lata's journey into the past through intermittent conversations.  This book is not a systematic biography.  The tour covered the United States, Canada, the West Indies and South Africa.  Earlier, Lataji was accompanied by Dileep Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nargis and Amitabh Bachchan.  But it must have been because he thought a professional presenter would be better, that Harish was added.  The famous TV-radio presenter himself has interviewed Lata Mangeshkar several times.

 * Bomb threat in Washington *

 Harish says that the secret to success of Lata's stage shows is proper planning and proper rehearsals.  The songs selected after a detailed discussion with the music conductor are days long rehearsals — only with proper preparation do Latha perform in foreign countries.  Harish describes his journey with Lataji with perfect admiration.  As he boarded the plane, even strangers stood up and greeted Lataji.  Lataji responds in a mesmerizing voice with her hands clasped with a smiling face.  People including airhostesses waiting for an autograph ...

 Although the Air India flight first landed in New York, its first event in the United States was in Washington.  At Watergate, Lataji's suite was arranged on the sixth floor;  Rehearsal right there.  When I heard about Watergate, I was immediately reminded of the controversy that led to the ouster of President Richard Nixon.  It was from here that the world-famous journalists later hatched their anti-Nixon plot.  But the receptionist at the hotel did not know who Lata Mangeshkar was.  The night before the event, the Indian Embassy hosted a cocktail party in Lata's honor.  But Lataji's group was thirsty for juices.  It was Lata's presence that kept the Bollywood musicians away from the party, forgetting everything when they saw Scotch whiskey.  The Washington Post came out with an interview with Lata Mangeshkar on the morning of the event.  Only then did the receptionist turn to who 'that Indian woman' was.  The concert will be at 8.30 pm.  An hour earlier, Lata, Usha and Mannade arrived at the John F. Kennedy Center.  That's when police launched a search after receiving a threat that someone had planted a bomb in the hall.  Filtered and inspected with the help of dogs.  No bombs, no mudslides.  It all ended in twenty minutes.  Lataji faced this conflict-ridden situation with utter indignation.  It was later learned that someone who had tried unsuccessfully to organize Lata's event was behind the bomb threat.

 No offerings, no speeches.  The program started with the lyric of Lata Mangeshkar.  The hymn was sung by Mukesh at the beginning of the film Kabhi Kabhi.  It was a fitting tribute to the first Washington event since the death of that immortal singer.  Lata's popular songs were meant for listeners in Washington:

 Radha Na Bol ....

 Duffy Wale ....

 Aplam Chaplam ...

 Ajare Pardeshi ...

 Aayoga .... Aayoga ....

 Naina Bursey ...

 Kahi Deep Jale Kahi Dil ....

 Then Mannadee's Qawalis shook the audience.

 Ay Mary Sohra Jabeen ...

 Yaari ... Hey Iman Mera ...

 The next event is in Detroit.  The automobile capital of the world.  Auditorium named after Henry Ford, owner of the first car manufacturer in history.  Stage modeled on an Indian temple.  An Indian touch to everything.  Lata Mangeshkar confronts every stage show with the fears of a beginner.  In fact, long before she became a playback singer, she started entering the stage at the age of nine!  In front of a packed audience for decades, many successful programs have been presented inside and outside India.  However, the tremors of the church do not go away with every encounter with the audience.  Are the words wrong, the vocal cords are changing, the melody is changing?  Something must have gone wrong ... Then I went backstage and started worrying.  Is it due to lack of confidence?  Can't say.  Latha would say: It's not like singing in front of a few people in the recording room.  If there is a mistake, it can be corrected.  Let's sing again and again.  Most people are not going to know if something goes wrong.  Live show is not like that.  An audience of thousands.  Even a small error will be noticed.  Criticisms will rise.  That is the basis of these fears.

 * End of Mukesh *

 The curtain rose.  When Lata Mangeshkar opened the door of the temple and came to the stage with folded hands, the entire audience stood up and greeted her with cheers.  For the hymn as usual

 Afterwards, the response to Lata's start with the rain song in Bursat was better than expected.  After his first round, Mannade went to a corner of the back stage and Lataji rested on the stage.  Seema's famous song in a majestic voice: Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hey ... Latha's golden feet were rhythmic when she heard it.  Lata was worried as Mannaday was not feeling well yesterday.  Mukesh Bhaiya came to mind then.  On the twentieth floor of the Pantcha Train Hotel in the same city, in room number 2007, the day the villain of death sought him out.  Mukeshji, who came to the US alive, returned to Mumbai on the same plane.  Can you forget all that!  Mukesh came to sing with him here four years ago.  Lataji woke up when the presenter came and called.  One of the songs to be sung now is by Mukesh.  Jane Kaha ... Gaye Wo Din ...

 New York - City of Skyscrapers and Mafia.  Hell of a lot of criminals.  And yet Lata Mangeshkar loves New York, for some reason.  They say: Perhaps because I do not live here, this is where all dreams come true ... No one interferes in the affairs of others.  Anyone with the mind and ability can grow as big as the sky.  It was in this city that I first met Yulbrinner.  I saw the play starring the blessed actress Ingrid Bergman, I heard Marilyn Dietrich singing on stage ... Nargis and Sunil were there too.

 The event was held in Madison Square New York this year.  The indoor arena was packed with 22,000 people.  Superstar Amitabh Bachchan had come from India to attend this important art party.  He greeted the audience in fluent Hindi and in a majestic voice.  Amitabh is accompanied by his wife Jaya.  In the presence of the Bachchan couple, it was interesting that Lata chose to sing the song from Abhimanyu in which they acted.  Half of the forty songs were sung by Lataji himself.  Yet the usual complaints did not go unnoticed: only a few songs were sung .... a lot of duets were left out.  Why not sing any of the classics?  The truth is that listeners all over the world can not hear Latha much.

 * Indians in the West Indies *

 It was a new experience for Lata Mangeshkar when the plane landed in the port of Spain.  This is his first event in the West Indies.  Absolutely unfamiliar and beautiful terrain, Lata was captivated by the photographer.  Photography is a hobby that Latha takes seriously.  Latha has a good understanding of camera quality and film quality.

Latha defines the art of photography in one word: the art of recreating what is seen with the eyes.  If you ask me which book I studied photography, I will answer: I studied music without reading any book.

Happy day dears!   Thank you!
